Well it is that time of year again. Time to celebrate being a family and enjoying each others company. Celebrating the festive season in a way that I think is uniquely Australian. It is carols by candlelight and in Katherine NT it happens usually around the first or second weekend of December
It is a fun night out with most of the town coming to the marketsquare to listen to christmas carols and see other performances. Largely the performances are by the local schools and the music is good and it is a fun atmosphere. This year was no different and the children performed beautifully. There was also 2 solo performances which were excellent as well as a combined church choir that sang the more traditional Christmas carols.
As always our kids loved the music and danced along with the songs. Santa made an appearance but our girls are still not convinced about going to say hi or having their picture with him and we have chosen not to push it. We want this to be a happy time for them not a scary memory of being forced to sit on Santa’s lap. They did get excited when he arrived and wanted to watch him walk by which was adorable to see.
All in all it was a great night, despite the heat and humidity that Katherine is known for at this time of year. Once you get used to the fact that you will never be dry it can actually be quite pleasant. But this will be our last Carols in Katherine as we set off on our big trip around Australia next month – scary and exciting all at the same time.
