This Privacy Policy explains what we (the Monizes family, operators of themonizes.com) collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We keep this simple on purpose: this is a family travel journal, not a data business.

1. Who we are

themonizes.com (“we”, “us”) is a family travel website run by David Moniz and family. It shares stories and practical information about family road trips across Canada.

2. Information we collect

We collect as little as possible.

Information you give us:

  • Email address — if you subscribe to our email list (see Section 4)
  • Contact form messages — your name, email, and message when you use the contact form

Information collected automatically:

  • Usage analytics — aggregated, anonymized page-view statistics (which pages are read, rough location at country level, device type). We use this to understand what articles are useful. This is not used to identify you personally.
  • Technical logs — standard web server logs (IP address, browser, timestamps) for security and to keep the site working.

3. Photos

Our site contains photos of our family, children, and dogs. These are shared by us intentionally to tell our travel stories. We never tag or identify children by name alongside photos where it can be avoided, and we do not sell or license our photos to third parties. If you appear in a photo posted here and would like it removed, contact us at david@davidmoniz.com and we will remove it promptly.

4. Email list (subscriptions)

If you subscribe:

  • We use a third-party email service (MailerLite) to send our newsletter and new-article notifications.
  • Your email address is stored by that service solely to send you our updates.
  • You can unsubscribe at any time — every email we send includes a one-click unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing removes you from the list immediately.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your email address with anyone else.

5. What we do with your information

  1. To send you the updates you asked for (email list)
  2. To reply to your messages (contact form)
  3. To keep the website secure and working (logs)
  4. To understand broadly what content is useful (aggregated analytics)

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your information for advertising profiles. We do not share your information with third parties except the service providers named below, which are necessary to operate the site.

6. Service providers

  • MailerLite — email delivery for subscriptions
  • Cloudflare — content delivery, DNS, and security
  • Google Fonts — font files loaded from Google’s servers
  • Self-hosted analytics — we may use our own analytics software hosted on our own servers (Umami or similar) that does not track you across other sites

7. Cookies

We use minimal cookies. Anything strictly necessary for the site to function may be stored. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking cookies. If we add non-essential cookies later, we will update this policy.

8. Children’s privacy

Our site shares content about family life, including children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Children under 13 should not submit forms or subscribe without a parent or guardian’s involvement. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

9. Data retention

  • Email addresses: kept until you unsubscribe, or until we retire the list
  • Contact form messages: kept only as long as needed to respond
  • Server logs: retained for a limited period (typically 30 days) for security

10. Your rights

Depending on where you live (including Canada’s PIPEDA and the EU’s GDPR if applicable), you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate information
  • Delete your information
  • Object to or restrict certain processing

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Material changes will be called out on the site.
